Memory and Light are the latest and most challenging works in my Time and Space series. Though the two works are similar, each has a its own point of view on the subject of consciousness through time.
The process of creating these two works took over two years from concept to completion.
Both of these pieces began as renderings in water clay, modeled with a live subject. From these I made waste molds so that I could continue to refine them in plaster. After achieving the desired level of detail I made silicon rubber molds, as well as a special waste mold for casting in glass. When cast, each sculpture with the glass casting mold intact weighed over 250 pounds.
Because of the very large size of these works it was necessary to build a temporary kiln as there was no functioning glass kiln large enough in the Bay Area. Each piece spent a total of about 14 days in the kiln. After casting I spent several months chasing and finishing the surfaces by hand.
Each step of the process presented special challenges and each of the two castings became imbued with unique meaning particular to its details: Memory is infused with color and texture and speaks of release from a raw interior place. Light wanders a more ethereal path from the past to the present.
